SPEAKING IN CONTEXT
Introduce yourself in Chinese: name, role and a next question
A useful first introduction gives your name and one relevant fact, then leaves room for the other person. You do not need to list your age, job, hometown and schedule all at once. Choose information that fits the setting and what you want to share.
Listen firstListen, understand and shadow
Playable synthesized Mandarin audio, created from our original scripts. Not a human recording or an official exam. Listen before opening the transcript; repeat using the player’s speed controls when available.
去学校
Listen once without the transcript, then repeat at 0.75× and shadow the sentence. Return to 1× to check natural timing.

你好,我叫林安。我是学生。我今天上午十点去学校。
Pinyin support
Nǐ hǎo, wǒ jiào Lín Ān. Wǒ shì xuésheng. Wǒ jīntiān shàngwǔ shí diǎn qù xuéxiào.
English meaning
Hello, my name is Lin An. I am a student. I am going to school at ten this morning.
Shadow this sentence
我今天上午十点去学校。
Listening cues and practice method
First listen for who is speaking, the time and the destination. Then shadow in chunks: 我 / 今天上午十点 / 去学校. Keep the time before the main action.
Read the dialogue by role
- Lin An
你好,我叫林安。我是学生。我今天上午十点去学校。
Build an introduction in two short steps
Use 我叫…… for your name and 我是…… for a role such as 学生. These patterns answer different questions. 我叫学生 would present 学生 as a name, so do not substitute the two verbs mechanically.
The audio adds a plan: going to school at ten this morning. That detail belongs to this particular example; it is not a required part of every introduction. In a study group, saying 我在学中文 may be more relevant.
Invite a response without inventing common ground
After your own introduction, 你呢? gives the other person a turn. If they mention learning Chinese, you can ask 你为什么学中文? Do not say 我们都是学生 unless the other person has actually said they are a student too.
Shadow, shorten and personalize
Repeat the audio in three short sentences. Then keep only the name and role. Finally, use your own chosen name and one relevant fact, followed by a question. You can use a fictional identity for practice; there is no need to share private details.
Swap a phrase and change one condition
Change one condition at a time and keep the remaining facts consistent. These alternatives are not synonyms.
- 我叫安娜 → 我叫李明
- 我是学生 → 我在学中文
- 你呢? → 你愿意介绍一下自己吗?
Common pitfalls: wording, context and information
我叫学生。
A response for this context
我是学生。
学生 is the role in this context. 我叫 normally introduces the name by which someone is called.
我们都是学生。
A response for this context
我是学生,你呢?
If you do not yet know the other person’s role, introduce your own and ask; do not assume a shared role.
Answer first, then check the reasoning
1. What role does Lin An state?
Answer and explanation
A student: 我是学生. Going to school alone would not prove that role, but the recording states it directly.
2. Does ten in the morning describe the person’s name, age or plan?
Answer and explanation
The plan to go to school. It is a time, not an age; no age is given.
3. Which fits a name: 我叫林安 or 我是学生?
Answer and explanation
我叫林安 gives the name. 我是学生 gives a role. Both are useful, but they convey different information.
Answer three prompts in your own words
Speak first, then draft if helpful. Drafts stay on this page, are not uploaded and are not automatically graded. The references are possible answers, not the only answers.
1. Introduce yourself in a Chinese study group using a fictional name, say you are learning Chinese, and invite the other person to introduce themselves.
Reference and self-check
你好,我叫安娜。我在学中文,很高兴认识你。你呢?
Include a name, a relevant learning fact and a turn for the other person. You do not need to add an age or profession.
2. Use a fictional name and say you work at a bookstore. Give the name and role in two short sentences.
Reference and self-check
我叫林安。我在书店工作。
Keep the name and workplace separate; no private age, address or employer name is needed.
3. Someone says “I am learning Chinese”. Ask why, without assuming that they are a student.
Reference and self-check
你为什么学中文?
Ask about their stated interest, not an unstated job or student status.
